The first time the five Executive Directors of UNEP present and former have been together. From left to right present Executive Director Achim Steiner, Klaus Toepfer, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Mostafa Tolba and the first Executive Director of UNEP Maurice Strong. All speaking at a Global Environmental Governance meeting organised by Maria Ivanova  of Wiliam and Mary College and Dan Esty of Yale.

As Maurice said:   We need a radical shift in the mind-set which dictates our priorities.  We must treat (climate)  it as a security issue, the most important threat to global security we will ever face.” He went on to suggest that: “Energy is at the heart of this transition. Climate security and energy security are two sides of the same coin: one cannot be achieved without the other.”
